Through new applications of advanced science and medicine, the DoD (Department of Defense) manages collaborative research that discovers, develops, and delivers biomedical solutions for Service Members, Veterans, and the American public. This includes potential solutions arising from biopharma, medtech, digital health research, and more.

Representatives from the DoD CDMRP (Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs) funding organization and USARIEM (the U.S. Army Research Institute of Environmental Medicine) research laboratories, both within the U.S. Army Medical Research and Development Command, will join this panel to seek out opportunities to inform and engage with representatives from both industry and academia. Tune in and learn about the variety of research programs of interest to the DoD and Congress, funding and partnering opportunities, as well as technology available for transfer/licensing. Find out what program areas might be a good fit for your research and participate in Q&A with representatives from their Natick or Fort Detrick branches. See what technologies are available for collaboration or out-licensing and get information on how and when to apply for research funding.

Col. Sarah B. Goldman
Director, CDMRP
COL Sarah Goldman currently serves as the Director, CDMRP, U.S. Army Medical Research and Development Command. Her previous assignments include: Commander of Public Health Activity – Italy; Director of Congressional Affairs at the Office of The Surgeon General in Falls Church, VA; Congressional Liaison for the Office of the Assistant Secretary of the Army (FM&C) where she worked with the House and Senate Appropriations Committees; Deputy Director, Neurotrauma Research Program at the U.S. Army Medical Research and Materiel Command; Traumatic Brain Injury Program Director at the Office of the Surgeon General where she was appointed as a member of a NATO Technical Team; and Researcher at the U.S. Army Research Institute of Environmental Medicine. COL Goldman holds a Ph.D degree in Kinesiology from Indiana University (2008) and received its Early Career Outstanding Alumni Award in 2015. She earned her Master’s degrees in Occupational Therapy from Washington University in St. Louis (1997) and in Strategic Studies from the U.S. Army War College (2017). Her awards include the Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal (with two Oak Leaf Clusters), Joint Service Commendation Medal, Army Commendation Medal (with two Oak Leaf Clusters), Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, and several service and campaign ribbons. COL Goldman has earned the Army Staff Badge and is a member of the Order of Military Medical Merit.

Usamah Kayyali, PhD, MPH, PMP
Health Science Program Manager, USARIEM
Dr. Usamah Kayyali is a Health Science Program Manager overseeing Strategic Science Management and Integration at the US Army Research Institute of Environmental Medicine (USARIEM). Before joining USARIEM he oversaw execution of research funding programs in various biomedical R&D areas at the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs (CDMRP). His experience in biomedical research includes serving on the faculty at Tufts and Harvard where he directed independently-funded research programs in lung disease and neurobiology. Dr. Kayyali is a board-certified toxicologist who managed transition of a drug candidate developed by his laboratory to pre-IND through a startup launched while at Tufts. He also served as scientific review officer, reviewer and evaluator of research programs for the NIH, DoD, VA and other organizations. Dr. Kayyali did his graduate work in Toxicology at the University of Michigan and was a post-doctoral fellow in the Neurobiology Department at Harvard Medical School.

Col. Troy Morton
Colonel, Commander of the U.S. Army Research Institute of Environmental Medicine
Colonel Troy Morton is the Commander of the U.S. Army Research Institute of Environmental Medicine. COL Morton left his hometown to attend Basic Training at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri in October 1991. After completing training he served in the Florida National Guard 124th Light Infantry. He received a direct commission in 1999 and served as a Treatment Platoon Leader until transitioning to the active Army in July of 2000 to begin a Podiatric Surgical residency. COL Morton graduated from Brigham Young University obtaining a Bachelor’s Degree in Developmental Psychology with a Pre-med emphasis. Upon graduation he received the Brigham Award. He attended Barry University School of Podiatric Medicine Miami Florida and received his Doctorate of Podiatric Medicine in 2000. COL Morton is a graduate of the Army War College and Command and General Staff College. His awards include the Army Meritorious Service Medal (five oak leaf clusters); the Army Commendation Medal (oak leaf cluster); and the Army Achievement Medal (two oak leaf clusters). He is a member of the Order of Military Merit. COL Morton and his wife Brenda have two daughters.
