From 2020 to 2021, Massachusetts added nearly 5 million square feet of lab space with projections of an additional 20 million square feet of lab and biomanufacturing space to be built out by 2024. This growth is happening largely outside of the traditional biotech hub of Cambridge, with much of the expansion in areas around Routes 128 and 495. This discussion will highlight the importance of growing the industry outside of Cambridge and Boston, barriers that can exist, and policies and incentives communities should consider as they look to recruit life sciences companies to their area.
